26th March 2020

Cubs online session 2 – Skills Challenge – problem solving
In Cubs we work on Challenge badges in order to gain our Queens Scout Silver Award.
One of the is called the Skills Challenge Badge which has the following items:
Take part in at least two problem solving activities that you haven’t done before. It should be something that you need to think creatively for. As part of the activity you need to say what you found difficult, what you did to solve the problem, and why.
Try two new sports or physical activities at least once. You could try:
tennis
dance
basketball
tai chi.
At home in place of Cubs, please can you ask your Cub to carry out the following tasks. You may need to have a go first! Let me know if you need a clue!
After they have finished ask them what was difficult and how they tried to solve it! It doesn’t matter if they didn’t manage it themselves, a helping suggestion is fine!
Task 1: Problem solving
Equipment:
3 different sized lids
Three pieces of paper larger than the biggest lid.
Setup:
Place the three pieces of paper next to each other on a table going from left to right in front of you : your Cub!
Put the lids on top of each other on the left most piece with the largest at the bottom and smallest on the top
Rules:
Only one lid can be moved at once onto the paper next to it (in the middle it can go either direction)
Smaller lids can go on top of bigger lids but larger lids can’t go on top of smaller ones
Challenge:
Move the lids from where they’ll are to the right hand piece of paper stacked with latest on the bottom and smallest on the top
Task 2: Problem solving
A tangram is a traditional Chinese puzzle made of a square divided into seven pieces (one parallelogram, one square and five triangles) that can be arranged to match particular designs.
Ask your Cub to make a square out of the tangram shapes.

Solution and other shapes to make.
Task 3: New sports
Please can you also consider introducing two new sports or physical activities. Some new more unusual ideas may be:
Croquet – you could use small sticks to make the hoops, a tennis ball and a broom for a mallet.
Bowles – use a small item as a marker and try to roll balls towards it and see who is nearest.
Volleyball – is a soft ball and piece of washing line as a net
Try a Keepy uppy challenge with a ball or maybe a toilet roll!
Hula hooping or skipping
Gymnastics
Pilates
Keep fit classes online (one advertised by school!)
Dancing
Tai chi
Yoga
Running
Cycling
(Note, they should be new for your child)
I look forward to seeing your photos or just hearing from you that you Cub has completed these missions so I can tick off the items in their badge log!
Now on OSM you can upload Badge evidence for me to see. Logon and go into badges, click on the badge and there is button to allow you to do this. It has been developed this we to support us whilst at home!
